Hail! to the Howardian Hills

By admin Leave a Comment Apr 20

With the Sportive season well under way, what better chance to get some training in than a Beverley Knights jolly outing to the Howardian Hills? A chance to do some serious hill climbing with a view to the Tour De Yorkshire, the ride was set to provide a perfect reconnaissance ride for two weeks time.

Eleven of the Knights woke early on Sunday morning (19/4/15) to meet in Hovingham at 9.30am. As the cars pulled up we were not greeted with the humble Yorkshire nature, instead Nora Batty was hanging out of the window telling us to meet somewhere else and not use the public road to park on. I can only imagine we interrupted absolutely nothing at all which was enough reason for Nora to get out of bed and give us a stern mouthful. Nevertheless more cars turned up and parked responsibly whilst unloading the bikes ready for the day ahead.

First point of call was to discuss the route for the day, much to Nora’s disliking, we congregated around Andy’s car bonnet looking over a map of the area. The route was decided as follows: Hovingham, Coulton, Gilling East, Oswaldkirk, Ampleforth, Yearsley, Brandsby, Stillington, Sutton-on-the-forest, Sherriff Hutton, then the 35% (honest) Bulmer Bank, Castle Howard, Slingsby, Helmsley and a quick sunny ride back to Hovingham. With all in agreement we set off for the day with fresh legs and anticipation.

Right from the off the landscape provided tough terrain. At any moment you could turn a corner and the road would ramp up and really test the legs. The first real test was a climb up out of Yearsley with fantastic views across to Hogwarts (Ampleforth College) and the surrounding landscape. Followed by a steady paced ride to Sherrif Hutton to scout a cafe stop. Although the cafe in Sherrif Hutton seemed to welcome cyclists, it was closed, so we carried on towards Castle Howard with what was described as a ‘slight hill up to Bulmer’ before we got there.

This slight hill turned out to be as challenging as what I can only imagine tackling the Passo Dello Stelvio feels like, incredibly tough, but the effort was rewarded as we rolled up to Castle Howard taking in the beautiful settings of the grounds passing through the many gate houses through the estate to get to the Arboretum Cafe. We were provided with welcoming service, fantastic food and even the sun made an appearance too.

The second half of the ride took the Knights North to Helmsley and the sun continued to shine, with another quick stop at the tower (Knights in the Tower, get it?) the ride back down to Hovingham was absolutely delightful. The ride covered 54 miles with a total elevation of just under 3,400ft. With summer fast approaching the excitement builds for more sun, miles and smiles to come!

Modern Technology & A Belgian Classic… In Lincolnshire

By admin Leave a Comment Mar 25

Thirteen Knights awoke early on Sunday 22nd March 2015 and drove to the Humber Bridge car park for a club ride following the Humber Bridge Sportive route (65 miles). The forecast for the day ahead looked good and there was an air of anticipation with the Knights eager to get out on the bikes for what was promised a relatively easy going fast ‘flat’ ride.

With the route successfully uploaded to two of the Knights’ Garmin computers we were off! Taking in the stunning view of the Humber with a crossing of the bridge the first of many highlights of the ride.

As the group gathered momentum building up the cadence, confusion quickly spread through the peloton as to which route we were taking, after a brief meeting it was decided we had gone off course however the road we had taken would eventually join back on to the route and everything would be fine. In order to join back on to the route a hill climb was required, as cyclists we like to exaggerate certain things but I’m pretty sure the ‘hill’ climb ramped up to 20% incline. When we got to the top another brief meeting was called. It turns out we had missed a right turning half way up ‘Mont Ventoux’ and that we needed to descend to join back on the route nevertheless it was a good warm up for most of us! An amazing set of roads were to follow largely flat and reminiscent of a Belgian classic with fields as far as the eye could see and a chance to gather some serious speed whilst taking in some breath taking views.

As we approached the sleepy Lincolnshire town of Caistor another hill climb was looming, with the pack split the lead group got stuck in to a climbing rhythm through Caistor to the top to stop and wait for the rest of the bunch. ‘Excuse me? Is there a cafe somewhere here?’ we asked a fellow cyclist passing by after another brief meeting over grumbles that the hill climb (23%) may have been unnecessary again. ‘Follow me!’ shouted the cyclist…..back down the hill. Again we missed the turning half way up the climb in to the market square where a wonderful little cafe hosted the club run fuel stop. As the sun grew stronger and the Knights tucked in to some lovely food it was smiles all around.

With a few layers removed it was time to set off for the remainder of the ride, what can only be described as pure bliss and a sure sign that spring was here. Rolling roads, blue skies and no wind made for great riding and it wasn’t long before the Humber Bridge was in sight (a comforting sight for most). As we made our way back to the bridge, weighing up the pro’s and cons of simply ‘bringing a map next time’ a chance to reflect on the day arose:  How incredibly lucky we are to live in this part of the country, the near perfect weather conditions and good riding meant only one thing – that 2015 is going to be a good year for everyone!

Hornsea July 2014

By admin Leave a Comment Jul 27

Following on from our summer solstice ride I thought I would write a quick post about our latest ride out to Hornsea. As you can see from the pictures (all 12 of them) there weren’t as many out on this ride as there was on the summer solstice one. We asked a local council worker to take a picture of us in the same spot as the last one and he took 12 so I though I would upload them all (some good photography work!!!). The ride did start off with 4 of us but a mechanical forced two knights to retire early leaving the two remaining knights the opportunity to sample the eggs benedict at Hornsea Mere.

Summer Solstice 2014

By admin Leave a Comment Jun 22

What better way is there to celebrate the Summer Solstice than to go for an extra long cycle ride? Beats dancing naked around Stonehenge anyway… Oh, and throw in a hearty meal at Walkington’s finest hostelry – The Dog and Duck – for our return. Nineteen Knights in all partook in the fast (in places) and fairly flat ride to Hornsea, taking in the sea air and savouring the light June evening. A great ride was had by all, although one particular Knight disappeared and took a detour – maybe his SATNAV was pre-programmed to visit Mr Moo’s. Perhaps he was checking out the North Sea, looking longingly across the water to Belgium – a possible destination for the annual September Knights Adventure. Watch this space for more details…

New Kit – Allerthorpe Ride, June 2014

By admin Leave a Comment Jun 10

The Knights took to the roads on a fine June Sunday for a flat(ish) 50 mile ride to Allerthorpe. It was a true test of cycling commitment that so many turned out the morning after a fellow Knight’s big birthday bash. (We won’t mention your age, Mike, but surely 60 is the new 50…) This ride marked a significant moment in Knight’s history – the christening of the snazzy new kit. A major flaw in the new kit’s design soon became apparent when a spectating child mistook us for a Tour de France team out practising for the big event. Erm, we certainly look good, but perhaps a little too good for our ability. Anyway check out the pictures below:

Derbyshire Day 2014

By admin Leave a Comment May 31

Beverley Knights’ third annual Derbyshire hill-climbing adventure was, once again, painful, exhilarating and…well…hilly! This year the motivation came from Le Tour de France, which is passing through the region to attempt the climbs of Holme Moss (on The Tour route) and then Snake Pass (not on The Tour route.) Much of our ride coincided with the route of the Wiggle Tour of The Peak, so there were certainly plenty of riders out on the roads. The ride started near Ladybower reservoir (up hill) and there was no time to get the legs going before we hit the steep deliverance climb that took the first cleat bashing victims of the day! From then on we knew what we were in for. Someone had come up with the bright idea of having a ‘King of The Mountains’ prize and also a fastest descent prize that encouraged speeds in excess of 50 mph. I don’t think that prize will be on offer again! The break of the day was in Sid’s Cafe in Holmfirth and as we were sitting around the back (it was a sunny day) I don’t think many of us realised the significance of the place. It was only when you went to the toilet and saw all the Last of The Summer Wine pictures did the penny drop. No wrinkly stockings or Norah Batties in sight! After refuelling, it was time to get back on our saddles and go straight over Holme Moss which was long and steady (at my speed) and then Snake Pass which was full of traffic and not the nicest of roads to cycle on (oh and long). The coverted ‘King of the Mountains’ prize went to Colin for the Holme Moss climb, I think he had been saving himself for this one as he was in a different class from the rest of us stragglers. Once we had got Snake Pass out of the way, it was back down to Ladybower reservoir and a few well deserved pints in the pub, again sitting outside in the baking sunshine. What a great ride. Rumour has is that Pat (alias Mountain Goat) was even tired when he got home. You can see details of the ride from strava below.

Hutton Cranswick Cafe – Ride 2 of 2014

By admin Leave a Comment Apr 8

This was the second ride of 2014 to Hutton Cranswick Cafe and it started off wet, which was probably the reason why there were only 4 brave knights out. It soon cleared up on the way and we put a few extra loops in to add extra miles onto the ride (mistakenly).
